CNA Training in NJ

The 4 Steps to Certification

1

Prerequisites & Background

Before you even start class, you must meet these state mandates:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Criminal Background Check (CBI): Mandatory fingerprinting via MorphoTrust. Disqualifying crimes include theft, abuse, or violence.
  • Health Clearance: Recent physical exam + 2-Step TB Test (PPD).
2

The 90-Hour Training Rule

NJ Department of Health (NJDOH) is stricter than other states. Online-only classes are banned for clinicals.

50 Hours
Classroom Theory
40 Hours
Clinical (In-Person)

Clinicals must be done in a Long Term Care Facility (LTCF).

3

Passing the PSI Exam

NJ uses PSI Services for testing. You must pass both sections:

  • Written/Oral: 60 Questions (90 mins). Must score 75%+.
  • Skills Test: 5 Random Skills (30 mins). Must score 80%+.
Critical Warning: "Handwashing" is a mandatory skill. If you fail handwashing, you fail the entire exam immediately.
4

Registry & Renewal

Once you pass, you are listed on the NJ Nurse Aide Registry.

  • Renewal: Every 2 years.
  • Cost: FREE ($0), but you must pay for a new background check.
  • Work Rule: You must have worked at least 7 hours for pay in a licensed facility during the last 24 months to renew.
