The 4 Steps to Certification
Prerequisites & Background
Before you even start class, you must meet these state mandates:
- ✓ Must be at least 18 years old.
- ✓ Criminal Background Check (CBI): Mandatory fingerprinting via MorphoTrust. Disqualifying crimes include theft, abuse, or violence.
- ✓ Health Clearance: Recent physical exam + 2-Step TB Test (PPD).
The 90-Hour Training Rule
NJ Department of Health (NJDOH) is stricter than other states. Online-only classes are banned for clinicals.
Clinicals must be done in a Long Term Care Facility (LTCF).
Passing the PSI Exam
NJ uses PSI Services for testing. You must pass both sections:
- ● Written/Oral: 60 Questions (90 mins). Must score 75%+.
- ● Skills Test: 5 Random Skills (30 mins). Must score 80%+.
Registry & Renewal
Once you pass, you are listed on the NJ Nurse Aide Registry.
- ● Renewal: Every 2 years.
- ● Cost: FREE ($0), but you must pay for a new background check.
- ● Work Rule: You must have worked at least 7 hours for pay in a licensed facility during the last 24 months to renew.
